Design and implementation of the operating room of the future: innovation for health service
The OPERA project aims to design and implement a new configuration of advanced operating room, adaptable to most of the surgery. Starting from the analysis of solutions designed to improve patient care and optimize the use of operating rooms, making them suited to different surgical specialties, we want to find out technological solutions for innovative and cost-effective management.
The goal is to develop an integrated system able to provide an advantageous relationship between efficiency and management costs and a consequent reduction in the number of operating rooms necessary.
The operating room of the future will be able to:
- Optimize the time frame of a surgery
- Ensuring proper supply of materials
- Enhance the quality of surgical treatments
- Improve the safety and quality of work of the surgeon and his team
In particular, the system will allow, through multimodal user interfaces (touch and touch-less screen, voice control, 3D mouse, inertial tracker, etc. .. ), the configuration and management of predefined scenarios related to different types of operations, regarding to both the settings of electromedical instruments available in the room, and the information flow on the clinical status of the patient before and during the surgery, and to the preparation of surgical instruments to be used. For each surgery the best arrangement/configuration of the operating room will be generated and the medical staff will get the best conditions to carry out its work in terms of functionality and ergonomics.
The room will be equipped with:
- A centralized control system of devices and environment, basically the entire operating room will be transformed into a "distributed robot" as it will be equipped with actuators, sensors, control systems and Human-machine interfaces;
- Automated and motorized shelves able to ensure a quick and custom setting and a better use of the display and the necessary equipment;
- Ergonomic and intelligent seating able to "follow" the surgeon in order to provide the support useful to improve the efficiency of the surgeon;
- Devices able to detect and monitor vital parameters during the movement of the patient from pre- to post-operating area; beds will also be equipped with automated navigation systems able to provide the moving of the patient in a semi-autonomous way;
- Environmental (for sterilization control and on-time detection of radiation dose) and wearable sensors for monitoring the strain of the surgical team;
- A home automation system for environmental control.
The traceability of patient, equipment, surgical instruments and medical team will be implemented through RFID technology and will be managed through a computer system.
In order to optimize the operating room of the future we will provide a modular and integrated management of all the components for the realization of an architecture that allows to obtain IGS functionality (Image Guide Surgery) regardless of the specific type of intervention.
